Hate crime prosecutions are to be fast-tracked following a spate of recent antisemitic incidents, the head of the Crown Prosecution Service has said.
Director of public prosecutions Stephen Parkinson has told prosecutors in England and Wales to bring charges more quickly, in order to clamp down on “daily incidents affecting the Jewish community, involving threats and abuse designed to cause fear and distress”.

Sir Keir has suggested there may be a case for banning some pro-Palestinian marches because of the “cumulative” effect on the Jewish community.
However, campaign groups involved in the marches have said it is wrong to connect them with attacks on Jews and argued they have the right to peaceful protest.
Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson told the BBC’s Politics Live: “Thousands of people go to demonstrate very peacefully but we absolutely should have zero tolerance for the hateful speech we see.”

The announcement follows a £25m government funding package for protective policing, of which £18m has been allocated to the Met.
The force said the money had already helped fund an additional 1,000 officer shifts per week, largely through overtime and redeployment.
The Met said the unit would initially focus on antisemitic threats, but could serve as a model for protecting other communities facing spikes in hate crime.
The force added that tackling all forms of hate crime, including anti-Muslim abuse, racism and homophobia, remained a core priority.
